Don Campbell began his education in visual art at Monmouth College and Southern Illinois University. After working several years as a graphic artist, he entered the University of Texas at Dallas to pursue his career as a sculptor and received his degree in fine arts in 1980. Campbell’s clay sculptures range widely in theme, encompassing human figures as well as abstract forms that capture a humanistic sensitivity. Many of the abstract sculptures seem to have been frozen in the process of changing from one form to another. They appear to have been alive at some time in the past or maybe they are in the process of becoming alive. The figurative sculptures depict the human body emerging from or into non-human forms. The surfaces of the sculptures have a rich, earthiness and are combined with other materials such as raw silk, melted glass, metals, and fibers to achieve textural variations. The work varies greatly in size. Some are small, sensuous tabletop forms only a few inches high, while others are several feet tall. Many of Campbell’s sculptures are installed in public places, corporate offices, churches, private collections, and homes. He has done several life-sized human figures for installation in public places. Campbell says, “We all have dreams, emotions, and memories that shape our lives and define who we are. The humanistic, organic forms and human figures in my sculptures express these inner feelings and reflect these inner forces.” Click here to view a list of Don Campbell's current and past exhibitions
