Review

Henry Moore once stated that “A sculptor is a person obsessed with the form and shape of things.”  Contemporary Master Sculptor Don Campbell creates stunning abstracted, free-flowing, organic forms that reveal a sophistication of shape and form.  Mr. Campbell is attuned to the unique energies of each individual shape he creates.  He sculpts with stoneware clay, whose earthly tone reflects its origins within the earth.  From this raw source, Mr. Campbell’s exceptional skill enables him to create such finely morphed and gorgeous objects.  Encountering Mr. Campbell’s sculptures is like being in the presence of rare, highly precious jewels, unveiled for a fortunate audience to receive.

The most compelling aspect of Mr. Campbell’s art is that the sculptures are usually inspired by the emotions that we all feel, and to which we are all highly attuned.  In technique, the artworks themselves are solely and definitively Mr. Campbell’s.  Through the composition of these sculptures, one can clearly understand Mr. Campbell’s beliefs about the fragility of solitude, tranquility, and peace.  Mr. Campbell has elegantly stated, “We all have dreams, emotions, and memories that shape our lives and define who we are.  The humanistic, organic forms and human figures in my sculptures express these inner feelings and reflect these inner forces.”  There is a powerful vivacity to the sculptures, even though the solidity of the works is preeminent.  Mr. Campbell’s art has a timeless quality due to its dignified presentation and exquisitely rendered forms.  Rounded and amorphous shapes suddenly take on amazing complexity due to the intricacy of the sculpture’s form.  Light plays off the varied rounded surfaces of the sculptures, and envelopes the entire work in a shimmering light.
